Anniversarygot it figured out. If they hired me as a library assistant, I'd be in the public eye, and they wouldn't want an eccentric like myself where everyone could see me (hopefully, that's not really the reason). They'd then have to find and train a new courier and bookmobile driver when the weather was starting to turn into Winter. If somebody out-qualified me, maybe they thought I'd get all despondent and quit working at the library anyway. So they countered with the better where-I-was job. I accepted. The next afternoon, I asked when all this would be effective. The assistant director said, "Yesterday." Well, I'm still at the library and still enjoying my work. I hesitate calling it work. Work implies a job is tedious, boring, difficult, and unenjoyable. At a recent family reunion, one of the cousins asked if they were working me hard at the library. I told him I liked the job too much to call it work. Lots of folks go to college to get an education so they can make lots of money. They end up spending so much time making money they don't have time left over to enjoy it. Isn't one of the purposes of money to make life more enjoyable? Find a job you like. It's a whole lot more important than making lots of money. Richness is a whole lot more than a bank account. (I better quit before I start preaching!) So, what do I like about the job? The people are friendly and great, but I also like working in quiet. I enjoy running around the countryside, watching the seasons change. I like the smiles from the librarians when I bring them their goodies twice a week. I can still make my own schedule, so long as I average a 40-hour week. It's good to be able to take an afternoon off for appointments, or recreation. I like to be able to see new books as they come to the library. Constant access to cheap donated and withdrawn books is adding, immensely, to my home library. I like to share these books with friends and family. I like seeing a happy kid excitedly talk about a book. I enjoy helping people find information they want. I like the diversity of my job. I'm a: driver, minor mechanic, teacher, carpenter, computer-repair technician, library assistant, building custodian, friend, record-keeper, messenger, and lots more. I hope
