Anniversary

My wife was, once again, browsing the ads in the paper and ran across a full-time library assistant position (Deja vu). It was in my library system. I knew who I'd be working for and with, and with Winter coming along, I thought a full-time, indoor position could work out nicely for me. Full-time benefits like paid vacations, retirement plans, and so on are nice, too. I applied.

The last Friday morning in September, before I left for the courier route, my bookmobile boss told me that the assistant director wanted to see me Monday morning. I didn't catch her (the asst. director) before I left, so I thought and wondered about what she had to say to me the whole time I drove about the countryside. Upon my return from the courier route, I ran across the assistant director, and she asked if she could talk to me for a short while Monday morning. Then she asked if I could talk right then. I said my reading student was waiting, but I could let him know I'd be a little late. She said to never mind and that we'd talk Monday.

All weekend, I speculated: Did I get the job? Was she going to try to do a gentle let-down? What was it? My wonderful wife pointed out that whatever the news, it should be flattering. According to her speculation, I either got the job, or the library thought I was so valuable in my present position that they didn't want to lose me. Despite her comfort-attempt, I spent an anxious weekend.

Monday came around and I did my morning chores (seemingly more quickly than usual), and I scraped around a bit for more stuff to do to kill a half hour. Adding to my nervousness, the assistant director called and said she was going to be a bit late that morning. She appeared, and she called me into her office. I didn't get the job.

What the assistant director wanted to talk to me about was a counter offer. The offer was to make my bookmobile/courier job full-time, add some computer maintenance duties, and, perhaps, training on other jobs in the system so I could cover in case of emergencies like illnesses or vacations. Then she said they were gonna pile massive amounts of money into my paycheck as well. I'm not in my job for the money, but I accepted.

I think I got
