Chapter 2: Yoga of Knowledge - Verse 68, 69 & 70

These verses deal with the orgin anger and lust.

Verse 68:

"tasmad yasya maha-baho nigrhitani sarvasah indriyanindriyarthebhyas tasya prajna pratisthita"

(68) O mighty-armed! One whose senses are restrained from their objects is certainly of steady intelligence.
Explanation: By keeping the senses engaged in service to the Lord, one attains steady intelligence.
A steady intelligence helps a man on path of spiritual endeavour.

Verse 69:

"ya nisa sarva-bhutanam tasyam jagarti samyami yasyam jagrati bhutani sa nisa pasyato muneh"

(69) The night for all beings is the time of awakening for the self-controlled; and the time of awakening for all beings is night for the self controlled.
Explanation: Men in this world can be divided into two - those engaged in material quest and those who are engaged in spiritual quest. One is engaged in material activities for sense gratification, and the other is introspective and awake to the cultivation of self-realization.
Materialistic persons remain asleep in such a night due to their ignorance of self-realization. The introspective sage remains alert in the "night" of the materialistic men.

Verse 70:

"apuryamanam acala-pratistham samudram apah pravisanti yadvat tadvat kama yam pravisanti sarve sa santim apnoti na kama-kami"

(70) A person who is not disturbed by the incessant flow of desires--that enter like rivers into the ocean which is ever being filled but is always still--can alone achieve peace. Not the man who strives to satisfy such desires.
Explanation: Numerous rivers enter the ocean, yet the ocean stays still. Similarly, a person who is not disturbed by desires and various emotions afflicting the material life can achieve peace.

A man who strives to satisfy his desires alone, doesn't achieve peace.
