Chapter 2: Yoga of Knowledge - Verse 40, 41 & 42


These verses deal with Karma yoga.


Verse 40:

"nehabhikrama-naso 'sti pratyavayo na vidyate svalpam apy asya dharmasya trayate mahato bhayat "

(40) Here, there is no loss of effort, nor any accrual of evil. Even a little of this Dharma protects a man from the great fear.
Explanation: In Karma yoga, there is no loss of effort that is being put in. If a work remain incomplete, it does not remain fruitless as in the case of works undertaken for the desire of fruits.
Even a little of this Dharma known as Karma yoga or Nishkama Karma (unselfish action without desire for any reward) gives protection from the great fear.

Verse 41:

"vyavasayatmika buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana bahu-sakha hy anantas ca buddhayo 'vyavasayinam "

(41) In Karma yoga, O Arjuna, the resolute mind is one pointed; the minds of the
Explanation: Only a few fortunate warriors get this opportunity to wage a war for Dharma.
This is the means for the attainment of immeasuarble bliss and path to heaven.

Verse 42:

"atha cet tvam imam dharmyam sangramam na karisyasi tatah sva-dharmam kirtim ca hitva papam avapsyasi "

(42)If you do not fight this righteous war you will be turning away from your duty and honoured position and will be incurring sin.
Explanation: Arjuna was a valiant warrior. He was reluctant to take up arms against his blood relatives and gurus.
But refusing to fight would mean a defeat in the battle and not performing his duty.

Hell is where a person finds himself when he neglects his duty.
