Chapter 2: Yoga of Knowledge - Verse 28, 29 & 30
One need not grieve for this body which is perishable.
Verse 28:
"avyaktadini bhutani
vyakta-madhyani bharata
avyakta-nidhanany eva
tatra ka paridevana
"
(28) O Arjuna! All beings have an unknown beginning, a known middle and an unknown end. What is the reason to lament?
Explanation: Lord Krishna says that as human beings exist in their own natural stages, there is no reason to grieve. We have no idea where we are from nor are we aware where we go after death. The Vedic wisdom encourages self-realization on the basis of the nonexistence of the material body.
It makes no sense at all to grieve.
Verse 29:
"ascarya-vat pasyati kascid enam
ascarya-vad vadati tathaiva canyah
ascarya-vac cainam anyah srnoti
srutvapy enam veda na caiva kascit
"
(29)
One looks upon This Self as a wonder; Another speaks of It as a wonder; Still another hears of It as a wonder. Yet even after hearing about It, one know It not.
Explanation: The fact that the atomic soul is within the body of a gigantic animal, in the body of a gigantic banyan tree, and also in the microbic germs, millions and billions of which occupy only an inch of space, is certainly very amazing. Owing to a gross material conception of things, most men in this age cannot imagine how such a small particle can become both so great and so small. So men look at the soul proper as wonderful either by constitution or by description.
Even among the seers, the speakers and hearers to find one with authentic perception, authentic speech and authentic hearing is rarity.
Verse 30:
"dehi nityam avadhyo 'yam
dehe sarvasya bharata
tasmat sarvani bhutani
na tvam socitum arhasi
"
(30)O Arjuna! The Self in the body is indestructible and eternal. It is true for all the Selves in all bodies. Therefore it is not fit for you to grieve.
Explanation:
The inequality and perishableness differ only in the case of the physical bodies. The Self in all humans, animals and even gods is indestructable.
Once you realize the Self there is no need to grieve.
Though the soul is immortal, violence is not encouraged, but at the time of war it is not discouraged when there is actual need for it
Arjuna had to wage the war to establish Dharma.
