Chapter 2: Yoga of Knowledge - Verse 22, 23 & 24

Lord Krishna compares the body with old worn out garments.

Verse 22:

"vasamsi jirnani yatha vihaya navani grhnati naro 'parani tatha sarirani vihaya jirnany anyani samyati navani dehi "

(22) As a man casts off old worn out garments and puts on others that are new, so does the embodied soul cast off its worn out bodies and enters into others that are new.
Explanation: The Lord compares the human body to garments. The cloths cover the body. The body embodies the Self.
Those who give up their bodies in righteous war enter into newer bodies. Casting off the old ones and entering new ones can only cause joy as in the case of new garments. Thus Arjuna has no reason to lament.

Verse 23:

"nainam chindanti sastrani nainam dahati pavakah na cainam kledayanty apo na sosayati marutah "

(23) Weapons do not cleave the Self, fire does not burn It. Waters do not wet the Self, and winds do not dry It.
Explanation: Lord Krishna describes the indestructable nature of the soul.
Soul can never be cut into pieces, nor annihilated by any number of weapons. It is untouched by elements like fire, water and air.

Verse 24:

"acchedyo 'yam adahyo 'yam akledyo 'sosya eva ca nityah sarva-gatah sthanur acalo 'yam sanatanah "

(24) The Self cannot be cleft. It cannot be burnt. It cannot be wetted. It cannot be dried. It is eternal, all pervading, stable, immovable abd primeval.
Explanation: The nature of Self is to pervade all elements. It is present every where and is subtler than all elements.
Therefore Self is Eternal and Unchanging.

These are the qualities of a Soul.
