Chapter 2: Yoga of Knowledge - Verse 7, 8 & 9


Arjuna drops his bow and arrows and surrenders to the Lord.


Verse 7:

"karpanya-dosopahata-svabhavah prcchami tvam dharma-sammudha-cetah yac chreyah syan niscitam bruhi tan me sisyas te 'ham sadhi mam tvam prapannam "

(7) My heart has become a victim of weak compassion and I am confused about my duty. I request you to tell me what is good for me. Please instruct me. Now I am your disciple.
Explanation: Having lost composure due to weak compassion, Arjuna seeks Lord Krishna's spiritual guidance.
He surrenders himself at the feet of the divine Lord and seeks advice.

Verse 8:

"na hi prapasyami mamapanudyad yac chokam ucchosanam indriyanam avapya bhumav asapatnam rddham rajyam suranam api cadhipatyam"

(8) Neither unchallenged sovereignty of a prosperous earth nor the lordship of the Devas or the demi gods, can dispel the grief that torments my senses.
Explanation: Arjuna felt helpless before the grief that was drying up his senses.
Neither victory nor power could remove the sorrow he suffered. He wanted Lord Krishna to dispel his grief and give him direction.

Verse 9:

"sanjaya uvaca evam uktva hrsikesam gudakesah parantapah na yotsya iti govindam uktva tusnim babhuva ha "

(9)Sanjaya said: Having spoken these words, Arjuna, the destroyer of enemies said, 'I will not fight' and fell silent.
Explanation: Sanjaya was narrating to the blind king the events that took place in the battle field.
Arjuna declared that he was not going to fight. Arjuna was overwhelmed with false grief due to family affection, and he surrendered to Krishna, the supreme spiritual master, as a disciple.

Arjuna who is overwhelmed with sorrow and compassion, surrenders to Lord Krishna.
