Chapter 1: Arjuna's Sorrow - Verse 41,42 & 43
Arjuna is unhappy with the destruction of a clan as it would bring about lawlessness.
Verse 41:
"adharmabhibhavat krsna
pradusyanti kula-striyah
strisu dustasu varsneya
jayate varna-sankarah"
(41)O Krishna! When there is no Dharma in the society, that is lawlessness prevails, the women become corrupt and we see adultary.
Explanation: Arjuna tells Lord Krishna that when a clan is destroyed, lawlessness prevails.
People forget the path of Dharma and women become morally corrupt.
Verse 42:
"sankaro narakayaiva
kula-ghnanam kulasya ca
patanti pitaro hy esam
lupta-pindodaka-kriyah"
(42)
When there is lawlessness and corruption in a family, both the clan and the destroyer of the clan go to the hell. The dead forefathers no longer receive the ritual offerings of food and water.
Explanation: The result of war, according to Arjuna, would be moral degradation. This would be hell to the clan and its destroyers.
It is ritual to offer food and water to the dead forefathers once a year. The food after rituals is fed to the cows and crows. When there is no Dharma, no one would make the offerings to the dead forefathers
Verse 43:
"dosair etaih kula-ghnanam
varna-sankara-karakaih
utsadyante jati-dharmah
kula-dharmas ca sasvatah"
(43)Due to the sin of the destroyers of the clan, which caused moral degeration of the family, all the rituals and traditions of all the clan and class are destroyed.
Explanation:
Since the destruction of a clan will result in lawlessness the traditional clan and class rituals are devastated
The rites and duties of all the families involved suffer.
Arjuna speaks out his mind to the Lord.
