Chapter 1: Arjuna's Sorrow - Verse 20,21 & 22© S.Kavita
Nov 13, 2000
Sanjaya informs the blind father of the Kauravas about the conversation between Arjuna and Krishna.
Verse 20:
"atha vyavasthitan drstva
dhartarastran kapi-dhvajah
pravrtte sastra-sampate
dhanur udyamya pandavah"
(20)Then Arjuna, who bore the insignia of Hanuman on his chariot flag, seeing the Kauravas arrayed against him, took up his bow.
Explanation: The flag on the chariot of Arjuna bore the picture of the mighty god Hanuman.
Arjuna looked at his cousins - the Kauravas - who were ready to attack their army.
He raised his bow, the weapon he was most talented with.
Verse 21:
"hrsikesam tada vakyam
idam aha mahi-pate
arjuna uvaca
senayor ubhayor madhye
ratham sthapaya me 'cyuta "
(21)O king! Arjuna spoke to Krishna these words-
Arjuna said:
Oh Acyuta, please place my chariot between both the armies.
Explanation: Sanjaya narrates to the blind king the conversation between Arjuna and Sri Krishna.
Arjuna addresses the Supreme Lord Krishna as Acyuta - the immovable in relation to time, space and objects.
Arjuna is fortunate to have the Lord as his charioteer. He asks the Supreme Lord of the earth to place his chariot between the two armies.
Verse 22:
"yavad etan nirikse 'ham
yoddhu-kaman avasthitan
kair maya saha yoddhavyam
asmin rana-samudyame
"
(22) So that I can have a look at those who are eager to fight with us in this impending war.
Explanation: A devotee of Lord Krishna, Arjuna had no intent to fight with his cousins and brothers. He was forced to come onto the battlefield by the ruthless Duryodhana - the eldest of the Kauravas - who never agreed to any peaceful negotiation.
Therefore, Arjuna was very anxious to see those who were leading the Kaurava army in the battlefield. He wanted to see them again, and to see how adament they were demanding this unwanted war.
In the above verse Arjuna gives his first order to Sri Krishna, asking him to place his chariot between the two armies.
