King Duryodhana, names all the great warriors and commanders on his side.
Verse 8: "bhavan bhismas ca karnas ca krpas ca samitim-jayah asvatthama vikarnas ca saumadattis tathaiva ca" (8)Your noble self, Bhisma and Karna, the victorious Krpa; Asvatthama, Vikarna, Saumadatti and Jayadratha Explanation: Duryodhana describes to his Commander in Chief, Drona, the men on his side: Asvatthama was the son of Drona. Vikarna was Duryodhana's younger brother. Saumadatti was the son of Somadatta. Jayadratha was the king of Sindhu. Verse 9: "anye ca bahavah sura mad-arthe tyakta-jivitah nana-sastra-praharanah sarve yuddha-visaradah" (9)And there are many other warriors and heroes who are prepared to lay down their lives for my sake. They wield various kinds of weapons and missiles and all of them are well skilled in the science of warfare. Explanation: Warriors like Salya and Krtavarma, would rather die for the sake of Duryodhana in the battlefield than see his suffer defeat. Duryodhana was fortunate to enjoy their loyalty. These men were very skilled in the use of weapons. Hence Duryodhana refers to them as heroes. Verse 10: "aparyaptam tad asmakam balam bhismabhiraksitam paryaptam tv idam etesam balam bhimabhiraksitam" (10)The strength of this army of ours, which is protected by our Great Grandfather Bhisma, is immeasurable. The strength of our enemies, under the protection of Bhima, is limited. Explanation: Duryodhana compares the strength of his army with that of Pandavas. Bhima one of the Pandava brothers was young and inexperienced. However, the Kauravas were under the safe shadow of Bhisma, their great grandfather, who was old and experienced. Duryodhana was confident of his victory, for he had the great Bhisma as his general. These verses introduce us to the kings who were prepared to die for Duryodhana. Also it casts some light on Duryodhana's state of mind.
