Chapter 1: Arjuna's Sorrow - Verse 1 & 2

© S.Kavita

Arjuna was born a ksatriya (a warrior). It is the duty of a warrior to engage in warfare and protect his kingdom and the rights of his people.
In the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Arjuna sees the army headed by his own cousins - the Kauravas - and teachers, ready to fight against his army.
He is overwhelmed by emotions and is bonded by affection.
In this pathetic state of mind, he loses his sense of right and wrong and is immersed in sorrow and delusion.

His anxiety is reflected in his question to Sanjaya.

Verse 2:

sanjaya uvaca , Sanjaya said:

"drstva tu pandavanikam vyudham duryodhanas tada acaryam upasangamya raja vacanam abravit"

Explanation: The noble Sanjaya, is aware that the blind and helpless old king Dhrtarastra, is also blinded by affection to his hundred sons.
King Duryodhana is the eldest of the Kauravas.
Sanjaya informs the blind king that Duryodhana, upon seeing the valiant and pious army of the Pandavas, approaches their teacher Drona - who is also their commander in chief - and narrates the following...

As evident, the initial verses tend to give an introduction to the state of mind of both the warring armies. My next article will deal with the third verse which is the conversation between, Duryodhana, the man leading the Kauravas and Drona their teacher.
