Every one of us has grieved through a funeral, or stood at a graveside weeping at the loss of the one lying in state. I must be counted among those who have.
"If a man die, shall he live again?" (Job 14:14). Job asks a question we have all asked at one time or another. The question of resurrection from the dead is a central subject of scripture, ancient and modern. The thought of resurrection give us two very important things; motivation to our earthly behavior, and hope for the future. The promise of immortality also helps us bear the mortal separations involved in the death of our loved ones.
Luke clarifies Christ's resurrection from the tomb after three days. "But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. "And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? "Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. . . . "And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day" (Luke 24). The Savior gave the Apostles a second witness. Thomas, one of the Twelve, had not been with them when Jesus came. He insisted that he would not believe unless he could see and feel for himself. John records: "And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. "Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. "And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. "Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed" (John 20:26-29). Even with the witnesses, many doubt the certainty of the resurrection. The Bible records many appearances of the risen Christ. He appeared Mary Magdalene at the sepulcher. He appeared to the twelve and was seen by larger groups of people as well (see 1 Cor 15:6). But with the knowledge that Christ arose from the tomb, still makes us wonder if the common man is entitled to the same privilege. Go To Page: 1 2
