Diary of a Thrifty Housewife

Monday
Dear Diary,
Laundry day (again!) Saved 40 cents by only using half the manufacturer's recommended amount of detergent. Probably saved a few more pennies by using cold water. Saved another 30 cents by only using half of a dryer sheet. (I think the dryer sheet companies are on to me, though: the dryer sheets keep getting smaller and smaller! They're not getting any cheaper to buy, however!) Wish it were summer so I could hang the clothes outside.

Tuesday
Dear D.,
Cleaned bathtub using baking soda. Can't write anymore. Arm hurts.

Wednesday
Dear Diary,
My arm feels much better today. I collected all of our pop cans and took them to the recycling depot. Got $5.25 for my efforts. ( Is it just me, or should a big bag stuffed with pop cans be worth more?) Went grocery shopping a little later, and saved $15.90 with coupons and specials. I think that puts me ahead for the week, don't you?

Thursday
Dear Diary,
Sorted newspapers, cans, glass and plastics, and set them out for the recycling truck. You know, dear diary, just between you and me, I still feel a teensy weensy bit guilty about paying $90 a year to have my recyclables hauled away for me every week. I mean, I could do it myself for a lot less, right? Of course, I probably wouldn't do it every week....things would start to pile up....I'd end up with a level 9 cleaning emergency and probably just chuck everything into the trash. Oh well, I guess $90 a year isn't all that extravagant for the environment's sake. Besides, my pop can money can probably cover most of it.

Friday
Dear Diary,
Took my pop can money and went on a shopping spree. At the local thrift store, of course! I got the cutest little vase for 2 dollars. It has CELERY written on the side of it. I'm going to use it on the kitchen counter to hold all the straws we get from fast food restaurants. We usually find at least a couple in the bag, even when we don't order pop.

Saturday
Dear Diary,
Boy Scouts canvassed the neighborhood today, looking for donations of pop cans. Wish I hadn't already gotten rid of ours this week. (I'm wondering, dear diary, do thrift and guilt always have to go hand in hand?) Went to the library and got a couple of mysteries, plus a couple of crochet books. I really need to use up all these odds and ends of wool I've got lying around. Am getting a little tired of granny squares.
