Grime and Punishment Part 2 - Laundry Tips and Tricks(My mom used a wringer washer, and for years dried all our clothes on a clothesline. It seems to me that our clothes were clean, and lasted forever. They were stiff as a board when we would take them off the clothesline, but ironing was still very much part of our weekly routine back then, and would soften things up so we could actually wear them.) Aesthetics One more thing I've learned about laundry - after a certain point, basic cleanliness takes second place to more aesthetic considerations, like the scent of spring flowers, the fluffiness of a cloud, and the brightness of a nuclear explosion. And that may explain the proliferation of laundry products in your supermarket. Because although clean is most certainly good enough, many of us are willing to spend our time, money and energy in the hope that through our laundry, we will achieve more. And that kind of beauty is most definitely in the eye, and the nose, of the beholder.
