Spring Cleaning Part 2 - Safe Cleaning ProductsIf you prefer to try store-bought cleaners, environmentally-friendly products are available in today's marketplace. The problem is finding them, and weeding out the hyped-up imitator from the real McCoy. Environment Canada's Environmental Choice Program uses an Eco-label to designate products that have met certain environmental criteria. Companies can pay to have their products assessed, and if they meet the criteria, they can then pay a licensing fee which allows them to use the Eco-label symbol on their packaging and for marketing purposes. So while it's not a perfect system --there may very well be environmentally-friendly products out there that are not sporting the eco-label, and I would also expect that the fees associated with the eco-label are passed on to the consumer - it does recognize the consumer-driven need for environmentally-responsible products.
