I also found cures that involved placing a slice of potato over the sting area, using papaya or meat tenderizer on the sting, and even one that involved Monosodium Glutamate being rubbed on the sting. One "cure" even suggested the old "hair of the dog" approach, putting honey on the sting.

In reality, the only cure for a bee sting is time. The pain and swelling will go away with time, and unless you experience one of the following symptoms, difficulty breathing or dizziness, no medical treatment is indicated. Pain can be relieved with such products as Aspirin, Motrin or Tylenol and Benedryl will help reduce the swelling and itch. While these are not necessary, as I said, time heals all, they do provide a symptomatic relief. If you do have breathing or dizziness problems you should consult your physician immediately, since anaphylactic shock can be fatal if not treated.
