From Sandy Florida to Snow-Drenched Vermont

It's getting to look a lot like Christmas, even here in the sunshine state. No snow, but brisk and breezy.

Many people travel during the holidays whether to visit friends and family or just to get away and spend their vacation time at their favorite locations.

I thought it would be fun to feature several bed and breakfasts that are featuring special holiday packages.

Let's start off with my home state and the very lovely Fairbanks House bed and breakfast located on Amelia Island.

Built in 1885, this magnificent 4-story structure (including a tower), 20 rooms, mahogany staircase, heart pine floors throughout (heart pine is no longer available), orange wood bookcases (from their own citrus groves) and 10 unique fireplaces, is a tribute to the Italianate style of architecture.

The house was built by Major George R. Fairbanks and was way ahead of its time in amenities. At the time, it had a telephone and inside running water. No small feat! It also had a unique dumb waiter that was used to move firewood from the outside storage areas to the wood boxes that supplied the 10 fireplaces.

The house was listed on The National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Today, your hosts and owners of the Fairbanks are Bill and Theresa Hamilton.

While on their home page, please be sure to click through to their Christmas Holiday Package link for information about rates and reservations and the click the link for Christmas Tour to see pictures (they are really beautiful)of this seasonal event. You'll find the links at the bottom of the page.

As an added bonus, the National Register Historic District of Fernandina, will have a tour of the district throughout December. All of the bed and breakfasts (and there are many) will be decorated and decked out in Christmas finery. You'll be able to tour each home and be entertained by musical events along the 52-block area.

Now we're going to visit another lovely bed and breakfast a little ways up the road.

The Red Shutter Inn in Wilmington, Vermont was built in 1894. Innkeepers Lucylee and Gerard Gingras invite you to this beautiful bed and breakfast for a scrumptious New Year's Eve dinner. Take a look at the menu, it will have your mouth watering!

Their Nights Before Christmas special offers a very nice package and a discount if you bring an additional couple! You'll experience luxury accommodations, full country breakfast, and dinner each night in the restaurants, sleigh ride and complimentary gifts.
