My article last month at my other topic, Florida Fun, covered Sarasota.

There are several areas that surround this lovely city. One of these is Anna Maria Island.

If you could create the perfect vacation spot featuring tranquil sea breezes wafting across the sand, powder-white sandy beaches with wild oats floating back and forth in the breeze, turquoise skies filled with fluffy white clouds, succulent seafood cooked anyway you want it, endless hours of uninterrupted nap time, excellent fishing both from the pier and deep sea fishing, uncongested streets filled mostly with people bicycling and friendly locals who make you feel welcome, then you've described Anna Maria Island. Check these links for more information about attractions, events, dining and entertainment. http://www.cityofannamaria.com or http://www.annamarianetwork.com

Situated an hour from Tampa and all the hubbub and noise of the city, Anna Maria is like an oasis beckoning to the weary traveler. A quiet place where you can relax and get to know fellow travelers as well as local residents. A place where you step back in time to 60's style housing to more modern brick homes. Some homes have their own "eccletic" flavor and individual creativity can be found all around.

There are many things to do for entertainment (besides beach walking, sun bathing and pool lounging) including the Ringling Museum in nearby Sarasota, Selby Botanical Gardens, the Bishop Planetarium, St.Armand's Circle for shopping extravaganza's and Longboat Key for fine dining.

A local waterfront restaurant and bar, Rotten Ralph's,is located at the Galati Yacht Basin. Be prepared for a very laid back atmosphere, friendly staff and excellent Key Lime pie. A dessert that is a "must" when you visit Florida!

About 10 miles west of Bradenton, Anna Maria Island has beautiful sun-drenched Bradenton Beach to the south, Holmes Beach in the middle and Anna Maria to the north.

The island itself is only 7-miles long and any place you want to go is usually an easy walk or bicycle ride. Most places are so convenient that many residents of this tiny jewel of a city can actually walk to work or take the trolley car that offer free rides all over the island. Just look for the teal busses with the manatees adorning the sides and climb aboard!

If collecting seashells is one of your favorite pastimes, then you've come to the right place. Be sure to bring a large container as you'll have a variety of shells of many colors, sizes and shapes to choose from.
