Campbell River - The Salmon Capital of the World

  • The Haig-Brown House is a British Columbia Heritage Site and is located on the banks of the Campbell River. It once was the family home of this famous author, fly fisher, and conservationist. Visitors can stroll through the garden and surrounding woods or walk along the river to see the salmon enhancement projects and wildlife. This house is now a Bed & Breakfast.
  • Kwagiulth Museum and Cultural Centre is on Quadra Island at Cape Mudge. It is only a 10-minute ferry ride from downtown Campbell River. The Potlatch Collection features sacred ceremonial objects such as masks, headdresses, coppers and other regalia used in Kwagiulth winter ceremonies. Visitors will also enjoy a vintage photograph collection and gift shop. At the nearby beach, there are over fifty ancient petroglyphs.
  • The Cortes Island Museum is not open year round. To get there, you have to take a forty-five-minute scheduled ferry ride to remote Cortes Island. The trip is worth it because the scenery and laid-back lifestyle are just two of the attractions. Learn about the local life at the recently opened museum in the old Manson's Landing Store building. Displays include "Windows on Whaletown" and the work of naturalist and author Gilean Douglas. The museum is open from late spring until early fall.

    Camping
    All of the provincial parks, such as Elk Falls, Strathcona, Morton Lake, Loveland Bay, White Ridge and Miracle Beach all offer camping. Some of the other provincial parks offer day facilities. On Quadra Island, there is walk in camping at Main Lakes, Small Inlet, Rendezvous Island, Surge Narrows, Octopus Islands, and Thurston Bay. On Cortes Island, there is camping at Smelt Bay.

    There are many resorts that offer cabins, camping and trailer hookups. With tourism being extremely popular in Vancouver Island, you need to make reservations.

    Golfing
    Don't forget to bring your clubs. There are many golf courses on the East Coast of Vancouver Island. The roads are good and it takes very little time to travel from course to course.

    On the new Inland Island Highway (Hwy 19), it takes just over an hour from Nanaimo and approximately 2 hours from Victoria. The old Island Highway (Oceanside Route 19A ) was once the only route and it takes you through all the towns. It is also where
