Campbell River - The Salmon Capital of the World


steelhead can be caught in the local rivers. Winter steelhead fishing runs from November through April. The local lakes offer trout all year round.

Where there is water, there is fish in Campbell River!

Skiing

  • Strathcona Provincial Park offers heli-skiing.
  • Mt Washington has downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and snowshoeing. There are over24 miles (40 kilometres) of cross-country ski trails. Downhillers and boarders are quickly taken to the top of the mountain on the high speed Eagle Express chairlift. Mt. Washington is a full-service ski destination with accommodations, restaurant, lounge, shops, lessons and equipment rentals. There are special classes for children and skiing programs for seniors and the disabled.

    Spelunking

  • Horne Lake Caves are south of Campbell River.
  • Artlish River Caves and the Little Huson Cave are north of Campbell River.
  • Upana Caves are to the west, near Gold River.
  • In Nootka Sound, there are more than 50 caves and some of them are very long (almost a mile)

    Museums and Galleries

  • The Museum at Campbell River is a world-class facility that offers permanent exhibits like pioneer settlement, logging, salmon fishing and the history of the First Nations. There is a feature film, "The Treasures of Siwidi" which is a mystical journey beneath the sea as told from a First Nation's perspective. Another video presentation is "The Devil Beneath the Sea" and it is a documentary on how Ripple Rock was detonated. The gift shop features First Nations arts and crafts.
  • The Campbell River & District Public Art Gallery is located in the heart of the downtown area. It features works by local and visiting artists who give lectures. At lunchtime, they show videos.
  • The Tidemark Theatre is a downtown Campbell River's landmark. It cannot be missed due to its peppermint pink façade. It was originally a movie theatre and now it is a civic performing arts theatre that hosts local productions as well as performers from around the world.
  • The Wei Wai Kum House of Treasures is located at Discovery Harbour Centre. At the entrance, you will find stunning totem poles carved by the locally renowned Henderson family. Inside the gallery, there is a quality selection of First arts and crafts, including masks, jewelry, books and clothing.
  • Gildas Box of Treasures Theatre is in the Wei Wai Kum House of Treasures building. This theatre is modeled after a First Nations' Big House. Singers, drummers, and dancers wearing the ceremonial regalia of the Laichwiltach people perform
