Old Settler Beans

© Richard Mann

Here's a baked bean recipe that uses canned beans, hamburger, bacon, and a slightly different mixture of sauce ingredients than normal. With barbecue sauce and chili powder, though, it has to be good.

Someday I'm hoping to find out who the "old settler" is who was involved in creating these beans. If you know anything about the origin of this name for these beans (and others like them), please let me know.

Old Settler Beans

  • 1/2 pound hamburger
  • 1/2 pound chopped bacon
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 16-ounce can pork and beans
  • 1 16-ounce can kidney beans, drained
  • 1 16-ounce can butter beans, drained
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 Tablespoon prepared mustard

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Brown hamburger, bacon, and onion together. Drain off the grease. Drain the liquid from the canned butter beans and kidney beans, then add them to the meat mixture along with the undrained pork and beans.

Mix the sugars, BBQ sauce, ketchup, chili powder, mustard, and a small amount of ground pepper. Add to the meat and bean mixture. Mix well and pour into sprayed 9 x 13 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

Serves: 8
