Baked Beans & Wieners: Beans for Kids Who Love Hot Dogs

Got kids? Do they like hot dogs and wieners? If so, I have the dish for you, gleaned from an old church cookbook, The Emerson (Idaho) 1st Ward Cookbook, attributed to Sherry Peterson. This is a variation on the old beanie-weenies we learned to love (or at least tolerate) when we were kids. To me, this looks infinitely more palatable. Give it a try to see if your small fry think so, too. (I wouldn't be surprised if your significant other--you know, that guy with the less-than-gourmet palate--will like this, too.)

Baked Beans with Wieners

  • 2 pounds wieners (use your family's favorite brand--there's a lot of variety out there, which will give you all sorts of slightly different results)
  • 1 extra-large can pork and beans (28 ounces, probably)
  • 1/2 cup catsup
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce (to taste)
  • 2 Tablespoons chopped onion (more than that for our family)
  • 1 Tablespoon butter

Slice the wieners into the pot. Add the remaining ingredients. Stir; add butter. Bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees.
