Vernon and Armstrong, British Columbia
Vernon, in the North Okanagan region of B.C. is situated amidst lakes and mountains. Early on a spring morning while driving towards Vernon, one can frequently see hot air balloons making the scenic journey over that area of the countryside. Located at the northern tip of Okanagan Lake, Vernon’s history and pride is reflected a collection of colourful murals in its downtown core. Vernon’s downtown also undergoes a weekly transformation in the summer time, when the main street becomes and old-time Farmer’s Market on Friday evenings. This is a great opportunity to look at products and crafts produced by local residents.
In the summer, in addition to the usual Okanagan pastimes of fishing, swimming, hiking and golfing, Vernon offers some more unusual activities. Once you have checked out the mountain lakes such as Echo, Keefer and Sugar, and, played in the turquoise waters of Kalamalka Lake, how about trying out a motor cycle tour, learning to paraglide or take in the International Sculpture Symposium? Hang gliding is also a popular pursuit in Vernon so don’t be surprised if you look up to see the colourful aircraft soaring with the ospreys! If so, be sure not to miss the Provincial Ultimate Frisbee Championships bring hosted in Vernon next year! If the more traditional pastimes are closer to your style, there are four golf courses, including the famous Predator Ridge and the historic Vernon Golf and Country Club, built in 1903! Family fun begins at Atlantis Waterslides and local beaches provide many water activities that can be enjoyed by all! A few minutes from Vernon, one can experience life on a working farm by visiting Davison Orchards, family owned and operated for three generations. Davison Orchards offers tours of their orchards, a chance to wander through their vegetable and flower gardens in addition to hosting a variety of workshops and special events. A favourite is the Family Pumpkin Festival with hayrides and a trip through the fields to find that special pumpkin for Halloween. Sip home -produced apple juice and learn all about the farming experience.
