Golden, British Columbia

Tucked in between the Selkirk, Purcell and the Rocky Mountain ranges, the town of Golden British Columbia is appropriately named. As the sun descends in the evening, the mountains glow in rich gold tones and one cannot help but be in awe of the sight.

Golden is situated on Highway 95 west of the Banff National Park and close to Yoho, Glacier, Jasper, Mt. Revelstoke and Kootenay National Parks. This town of just over 4000 people offers more for the visitor than many more populated places. From the mountain peaks to the low-lying wetlands, there is something for everyone to enjoy. I will be hard pressed in this article to fit in all that Golden has to offer but I will do my best – for the rest, you will just have to pay Golden a visit!

Golden is the ultimate destination for the tourist to experience the finest of what British Columbia has to offer. The scenery alone is spectacular; but in addition, Golden has four season activities that can all be found in one area.

In the spring, summer and fall, one can hike, bike or horseback ride the gentle or more challenging trails around Golden.

In the summer, hang-gliding and paragliding are extremely popular and for those wanting to learn how, lessons and tandem flights are available. A trip to the top of Mt. 7 is a must for the spectacular view of the valley below. As a bonus, one may also have the chance to watch the hang-gliders take off and perform aerial feats high over the valley.

For bird and wildlife enthusiasts, a slow-float tour through the wetlands is a great opportunity to get those photographs that you have always wanted. River raft and kayak tours will make your trip unforgettable! Don’t want to walk too much? An ATV or 4X4 tour will take you through some spectacular mountain wilderness scenery on back roads or logging roads. When approaching Golden from the south, the waterways were the first thing about the area I noticed. Along the side of the highway, one can see the Columbia River, the flood plains and the nesting platforms in place for the numerous migrating birds that visit to breed and to rest. The Columbia Valley Wetlands are a vital part of the area eco-system and important to many species of birds and wildlife. For details of the types of flora and fauna in this important area please check out the East Kootenay Environmental Society website at http://www.ekes.org/columbia.html As mentioned earlier, it is possible to take boating tours of the longest wetlands in North America so be sure to bring binoculars and cameras for an opportunity to see ospreys, blue herons, geese and other wildlife.
