Kelowna, BC - Part II
Fall is a great time for apple picking, wine tasting and enjoying the local farm produce. Golfing continues at Kelowna's scenic golf courses until the snow flies. A trip to Mission Creek to watch the spawning Kokanee (fish) is an educational experience for all age groups. Ranches offer trail rides, a great way to admire the changing colours of the season. Winter of course brings the onset of ski and snowboard season! The Okanagan has a number of world-class ski hills. Closest to Kelowna are Big White and Crystal Mountain. There are also many cross country and ski-doo trails in the vicinity. Big White is constantly expanding its’ services and attracts many visitors from overseas. In the springtime, it is possible to ski on one of the mountains in the morning and play golf in the valley in the afternoon! Kelowna has a selection of accommodation options to suit every preference and budget. Hostels, hotels and B & B’s are some of the choices and there are many RV Parks, and campgrounds to choose from for those who enjoy the great outdoors. Some Provincial Parks have reservations system in place for a number of their busier parks. Art and culture are evident everywhere. Symphony concerts and theatre productions are held year round and, in the summer months, concerts in the park are very popular. Wynona Judd recently held a concert there. Sculptures by local artists are scattered throughout the city. The Dolphins, a beautiful fountain near the Grand Hotel was carved by a local artist, Dow Reid. The fountain is a favourite setting for wedding photographs. Numerous galleries display the products of local artists and artisans. You will find a listing on my links page that can help you decide which ones to visit. I personally love shopping for pottery and the variety and quality available in Kelowna is excellent. Heritage sites are always wonderful to visit and Kelowna has a number of such spots well worth going to see. The Father Pandosy Mission is a well-preserved timepiece of the early Kelowna settlers. With loads of information about native, natural and local history, a trip there with a picnic makes a great outing.
