Celebrate in Wurzburg - Wine Festivals and other Festivals in Southern Germany©
Mar 29, 2002
Spring has sprung in Germany, and the warming weather tempts me to pack away the wool sweaters for the summer. Though the arrival of spring offers enough of a reason to rejoice, I hardly need the excuse. Celebration is in the air, and I believe it can best be indulged by a visit to Würzburg, Germany, during the spring and summer. Both the heart of the Franken Wine Country and the northern tip of the famed Romantic Road, Würzburg is the ideal place to begin your exploration of Southern Germany. Lovers of wine, food, architecture, history, theatre, music, art, and shopping will relish the city's many sites and flavors, which are too numerous to mention in this article alone. Baroque facades line the streets, intermingled with contemporary storefronts and grand churches. World-famous wine taverns offer selections of premium Franken wines and a sampling of great Franken cuisine. If these attractions are not enough to intoxicate you, consider all of the events that abound during the spring and summer months. Festivals dedicated to wine, Africa, Mozart, patron saints, and Franken culture are just a few of the many celebrations taking place. Whatever your personal travel interests, I venture to say they will be celebrated Würzburg in the coming months. Here are some of the events at which I hope to see you. Six Wine Festivals!
If it is wine that you seek, Würzburg is an excellent place to discover it. A quick glance at the calendar shows that six weinfests are scheduled in Würzburg between now and September, not to mention those taking place in the surrounding towns. Clearly, the enthusiasm for Franken wines remains strong in this city where residents have been making wine since the 8th century. The Würzburger Weindorf (Wine Village Festival) heralds the beginning of the wine festival season. Some forty tents cover the Marktplatz (Market Place) during the ten-day long event. Revelers have the opportunity to taste over 100 different vintages of Franken wine, guaranteeing the chance of finding a favorite. Africa in Germany
Should the delights of Franken wine not be to your taste, consider participating in the Africa Festival. Occurring simultaneously as the Weindorf, the Africa Festival is the largest celebration of African culture in Europe. The best in African music, dance, food, art, and fashion come together to forge a truly remarkable exhibition of the continent's great and diverse cultures. Highlights this year include a showing of haute couture from Senegal and a dance-workshop.
