It's time to put on the tour guide hat. We have family visiting throughout the summer, and it looks to be a busy month or two. The prospect of so many visitors prompted us to finally invest in a futon-like bed for our "office/spare room." Our previous guest bed was an air mattress with a leak. Armed with a new bed, linens, and other guest accessories, we at least have a proper bed for our guests. Now, if we only knew what we're going to do for the next few weeks.
It's a shocking prospect to be the expert on local activities, sites, and restaurants. I've lived in Germany for two years, and at times, I still feel new to the area. I t seems odd that I am responsible for someone's introduction to Europe, shaping someone's first experiences by selecting this village, this castle, this weinfest. But here I am, making plans for daily excursions and various activities, or at least making an attempt. Lately, much of the planning seems to go as follows: "So, uh, what do you want to do?" "I don't know. Whatever you decide is fine." "Well, we live here, so if there is anything you would like to see, or have heard about, we'll do it. Really, it's not a big deal" "Oh, I'm sure you know best." "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" A lack of parameters can be frightening thing. If I had been given a list of the Top 100 things my family wished to see, I think I might have had an easier time narrowing the field than trying to determine which site or which town might be of most interest. Since everything is new, the open possibility and the range of choices is staggering. I don't want to default onto the easy tourist trappings, but I can't kill myself trying to be intuitive either. So we quickly found ourselves in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Admittedly, I have always found the popular destination to be a stroller's delight, and I usually find something new to see. My next thought is a day in Bamberg, which offers enough history, browsing, antiquing, and architecture to satisfy all disparate tastes. Another thought is to reach into the kit bag of places I have avoided visiting in anticipation of future family trips. I stumbled upon this idea through observing friends who experienced the same castle three times in one year. I just hope the family wants to go. Go To Page: 1 2
