There is something cathartic about a good scream. Not just any old scream, but a good fear-induced, bold scream. Whenever I need to satisfy this craving, I seek out a roller coaster. Now, I am not an amusement park junkie, but sometimes I need that sense of danger. Fortunately, Germany boasts some spectacular theme parks, Legoland, and Europa Park to name a few. All of them offer a splendid diversion from the rigors of travel, the formality of guided tours, and the stress of getting from here to there. Especially for people traveling with children, an afternoon at a fun park might be in order.
While Germany's grandiose spreads hold some attraction for me, I confess that I prefer the smaller locales, mostly for their home-spun charm and smaller crowds. In essence, they don't require the same amount of time, commitment, and energy that a place like Euro Disney outside Paris or Europa Park demand. I just need a half-day, and I am good to go. This is how I came to know about Freizeitland.
If you are traveling along Autobahn 3, midway between Würzburg and Nürnberg, you will see a fun park called Freizeitland Geiselwind. A medium sized fun park, it offers a rides, games, circus performers, and a small zoo. It may not have the slick packaging of its larger counterparts, but the place certainly entertains you nonetheless. A new attraction that opened this year is the T-Rex Tower, a tall tower that pulls the seated occupants swiftly to the top, and plunges them down to where you start. For the brave who venture this ride, you will find your stomach floating somewhere in between. The central ride attraction at Freizeitland is the Boomerang rollercoaster. Reaching a top speed of 75 kilometers an hour, the Boomerang pulls the cars backwards up a ramp before sending them hurtling though a series of corkscrews and razor turns. Yes, it certainly makes you want to scream. While the perils of amusement park rides may work for some, they may not suit all. Fortunately, there are enough options for games and entertainment at Freizeitland to make everyone pleased. Some friends of mine took their small children to the park, and spent much of their time in the miniature zoo. For their kids, no ride could compete with watching a small group of monkeys. Should you be in the Würzburg or Nürnberg area, I hope you have the chance to stop off at Freizietland. Every vacation needs a moment for a little scream-out-loud fun. Go To Page: 1 2
