Since Sunil Gavaskar left the Test scene, India has been struggling to find a steady opener. Sidhu did show promise and proved to be more than a "Strokeless Wonder".
But every good opener needs a compatible partner and unfortunately India could never find two reliable openers at the same time. Azhar had a tiff with Sidhu in England and thee Sardar, a man of honour, decided to catch the next plane to India. After that India has always faced the opener nightmare whenever an overseas tour comes up. Now India is in South Africa and short of an opener. Again the batting line up is being given a shake up with Laxman being asked to open. Laxman is not at all comfortable with a hard red cherry but Coach Wright says "Team before individual". Now that would do a great service to Connor's pride, wont it? Connor, they say is short of practise and hence may have to sit out. Already one down in the series India has little chance of even levelling it. Unless and untill India prepares hard and bouncy wickets to train the youngsters there is no way India's fate can change. Gavaskar's secret was backfoot play. That gave him that extra second to see the ball, make sure his wicket is covered and play the shot. But India's batsmen rarely step back as they are so used to drag their feet up to the pitch of the ball. Gavaskar and Sidhu have left a big void in the greatest game on earth, morever for India. We do hope that Connor will not dissapoint the fans. It is big surprise why stalwarts like Gavaskar are not invited to teach the openers the fine aspects of batting. Next week we will take a peep at the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar! Till then adios!
