But the thrill is missing. Tim Astley, a big cricket fan from down under has invented something that cricket lovers from all over the world absolutely adore.
Tim has created a software where you can play in cricket tournaments, from teams all over the world - without leaving your house!
Ultra Cricket is a play by e-mail cricket league. It has well over 500 teams competing in numerous tournaments. Anybody can enter his own team, there are certain restrictions and rules which regulate the creation of the team. But Tim has a fantastic Java appelet which makes it very easy to get around all the complications.
You have to make team consisting of 24 players. Each player will be classified under various categories such as Age, Skills, Batsmen, bowler, all rounder etc.
You will decide how good or bad your player will be, what skills he will have and how much he can improve. I know, I know, some of you must be wondering why not make all the players great in every field! Who needs bad players anyway?
Ha, ha, but then there will be no fun if every one was good. Tim has cleverly formatted the structure that ensures that the team is balanced. Every manager (Person creating the team) is alloted certain points. These points are used to purchase talent. There is a limit on the total points available plus restriction on the points you can spend on a player.
After your team is ready (24 players), you choose 11 players and then give specific instructions on how your team will play in the Tests and ODI`s. These instructions are called orders. You are required to send in 1 Test match order and 2 ODI orders.
Orders are to be sent before each fixture (Fixture- 1 Test& 2 ODI). And the results then arrive on a pre-determined date. You will need Win Zip (or any other decompression agent) to view them.
There are 5 conferences with numerous divisions in each.
The best part however is - Ultra-Cricket is totally free. There is a certain fee for members who can have a few advantages over non-members, but Tim has spared the hundreds of other cricket lovers who cannot afford to pay most of the time.
