You should buy a copy of the book, "A Bat In My Pocket" A memorable friendship, by Amanda Lollar to really understand bats. The pictures are wonderful as is the true story.
Only three of the bat species that live along the Mexican border of Arizona and Texas consume nectar. All the rest eat insects. Bats are a major predator of night flying insects that include mosquitoes and insects that damage crops. Mouse-eared bats, the most widely distributed in North America, can eat up to 600 mosquitoes an hour and a large community of bats can consume billions in one season. Yes; I said BILLIONS! The 20 million free-tailed bats of Bracken Cave in Texas eat a quarter of a million pounds of insects in ONE NIGHT! Think about it the next time you think of these shy, beneficial wonders!
