I was asked what the smallest bat in the United States was and I had to do some research to find out.
The Eastern Pipistrelle is one of the smallest bats in America. It measures at only one inch long when full grown! You could say that it is the hummingbird of the bat kingdom. This tiny bat likes to roost on tree foliage, Spanish moss, and sometimes in building. When you see them fly, they resemble large moths. Their main diet consists of flies, and ants. The chances are you will never actually see this tiny bat in the wild, and even if you did you would probably mistake it for a moth. Just to give you an idea of how trulu tiny this remarkable friend to mankind is, take a cork from a medium size bottle of wine; then cut it in half! That would give you an approximate idea of how very tiny these wonderful little bats are.
