Bats and the Baobab tree.

One of my favorite books on the subject of Bats is Merlin D. Tuttle's book called; America's Neighborhood Bats.

Much of what I will be writing over the next few weeks will come from this wonderful book.

You may order this book online at Amazon Books or you may get a copy of it at your local library.

Just one more way bats help us.

The bat species that feed on fruit is very beneficial to us in a different way than the insect eating bat.

For example; throughout the tropics, bats help with the seed dispersal and pollination of fruit and nectar plants and trees.

Bats are the key to the survival of the rain forest!

Some bats are crucial to the entire eco-system of night blooming plants and trees.

In fact, many plants have developed unique odors in order to attract bats to them.

The famous baobab tree of eastern Africa is one example. Only bats are able to approach this flower from below in the manner that will ensure the pollination of the bloom.

Other flowers have the specific shape that enables a bat to gain access and help with pollination at the same time.

Of course bats do this because a sweet nectar awaits them.

It is a mutually beneficial relationship that has been going on for eons.

This African tree is often called the tree of life because it is so important to other wildlife. And it depends on the bat for its survival!
