Sweet Scented Celebrations

There are many special events to celebrate throughout the year, and inevitably special aromas are associated with them. Traditional practices involving natural aromatic substances determined the legacy that we enjoy today, but living in the cities have largely eroded the possibilities of bringing into our homes the natural products that gave us the original aromatic connection. The fresh cut pine for Christmas is one example. However, in the essential oils we have a mobile, compact, and thoroughly modern method of re-creating the aromas of old.

When using the essential oils around the house during a celebration, arm for an aroma that will evoke without being over powering. Gently build up an aroma picture that reflects the occasion, using several methods at the same time, or making one special blend.

The association of a particular aroma for the individual depends very much on where he or she was brought up and lives. In America, the aroma of bayberry evokes Christmas because traditionally at this time candles with this fragrance are burned in memory of the first settlers who used the wax from the bayberry to make their candles.

If the aroma of pine is what brings back memories to you, like going out and cutting and bringing in your own tree. But now it isn’t always that easy to capture the scent of pine when Christmas trees are made of plastic and tinsel, and real ones are coated with a preservative to stop the needles from dropping in today’s modern homes. So even if a real tree is present, the resins that where once released from the needles can no longer escape to perfume the air. But with natures essential oils the aroma of Christmas need not be forgotten. Simply spray the tree with a mixture of 1 cup of water and 6 drops of essential oil of pine, or put a few drops of pine oil on an absorbent material and tuck around the base of the tree.

Here are several essential oils that you may use to help re-create your Christmas memories.

CHRISTMAS ESSENTIAL OILS:

Spices: Cinnamon, Clove, Bay

Trees: Pine, Cedarwood

Citrus: Mandarin, Sweet Orange, Tangerine Resins: Frankincense, Myrrh

With whatever season or celebration you are enjoying remember that old time feeling is just a drop away.
