The magazines we buy, the beauty products we see advertised on television, what do they all have in common? Well the ad’s of course: and what are these ads’s telling us? They are telling us to buy their product and you will have soft, satiny skin. It’s not just the look we are after either, our sense of touch demands a velvety softness too. So before you go out and spend your hard-earned money on products that say you will have velvety soft skin in 30 days or your money back. Try making your own body scrubs at home, with just a few basic ingredients…. Sea salt, essential oils, and groundnuts, you will have the makings for several body scrubs of your very own.

Body scrubs rid you of skin that’s dry, scaly, and flaky, often the result of overexposure of either heat or cold. Scrubs can be used once a week, although a few gentle ones can be used more often. I will be providing several of these recipes at the end of this article. Keep in mind thought, if you have rashes, acne, sunburned skin, or spider veins, avoid scrubs, as they might make the condition worse, instead just use a soft body brush in the shower or bath.

There are three main ingredients in a body scrub, exfoliators, carrier oils, and essential oils. A exfoliate could consist of sea salt, ground almonds or wheat bran. A carrier oil could be grape-seed, hazelnut, or almond oil these a my preference because they penetrate the skin readily and supply fatty acids to the skin, leading to increased elasticity and a soft shine. Now the essential oils used here are for fragrance and healing. Grapefruit essential oil gently stimulates and refreshes. Juniper oil is especially useful for fighting off water retention as well as stress and fatigue. Lavender oil can help heal minor inflammations, and relieve day to day stress. I hope you enjoy these wonderful body scrubs, and I would love to here any of your comments.

Sea Salt Body Scrub:

1 cup fine sea salt ½ cup grape-seed, hazelnut, or almond oil 10 drops grapefruit essential oil 10 drops juniper essential oil

1. Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and stir thoroughly. 2. Spread the mixture onto damp skin and massage in. Concentrate on the tough, rough, thickened areas of the body, such as the feet and elbows.

You can also use this scrub to alleviate a dry, flaky, scalp and dull hair…. often the result of long-term use of permanents and colorings. Gently massage 1-2 tbsps. Of the scrub onto the entire scalp for 5 minutes; then shampoo and condition as usual. Because this scrub can be harsh on the skin only use 1-2 times a month.
