A FISH STORY - CONTEST WINNER!

I'd like to thank everyone who entered The Suite101.com Fish Story Contest. I had a great time reading your stories and it was not easy to picking a winner. I did have to pick one, though, so with the help of my wife, we thought the following story was unique, entertaining, and it's the WINNER!

A FISHY STORY or How I Met My Husband Fishing by Marianne Friederich

One day late in the spring of 1972 I decided to go fishing with my younger sister, Mimi, at a local lake just about 10 miles from home. We packed up a huge lunch basket, our rods, some bait, and headed out. I was 18 years old at the time and full of vim and vinegar. My sister was 10 and a little snot at times, but a good go-fer and helper when she wanted something, and she wanted to go fishing! I was also a very opinionated young lady and not given to much compromise with the opposite sex. Females had been going through a sort of revolution over the preceding few years, and I was no exception.

We arrived at the marina and rented a small boat. It wasn't motarized, but we didn't think we'd need one of the larger boats, and could just row at our leisure to different coves and fishing spots. We started out about 8:00 A.M., which was really good for me in those days, getting up that early. I'd just graduated from high school and was feeling very independent and proud of myself. I was also working at a local Dog & Suds Drive-In and making my own money, although $3.50 an hour didn't go too far, even in those days. But back to the FISH story -- Mimi and I had been fishing for about 3 hours, catching some crappie and bluegill, but nothing of any size. We were just catching them and putting them back, having a good old time. We were far away from where we'd put into the water, and weren't in sight of the marina at all. Mimi had to use the facilities, so I just rowed over to the bank, which was full of trees and foilage, and told her to be careful of poison ivy and critters, and she left the boat for the woods. I decided this would be a good time to eat our lunch, also, so I took out the sandwiches and we both ate and then set out to fish some more.
