Tournament!Draw Tournaments, Buddy Tournaments, Paper Tournaments, and Big Bass Tournaments -- you have heard about these for years. Now there are Crappie tournaments, Walleye tournaments, Trout tournaments. The list goes on forever. It seems these days you can find any type of tournament you want, at any lake you want, at any time you want. I have even fished in some half-day bass tournaments that were conducted on Wednesday afternoons, for that sorely needed mid-week fix. What I am trying to say is "I LOVE TOURNAMENTS!" I love tournaments, but especially BASS TOURNAMENTS. So grab your gear and let's spend a day on the water in a typical bass tournament. The first thing we need to look at is what kind of tournament we want to fish. Since I am such a likable, lovable and fun person to fish with, I think a Buddy Tournament is in order. A Buddy tournament is normally an open tournament, which means that it is open to the general public. Second, you need to find a Buddy to fish with. I know, I know, for some of you fishermen out there that's an almost impossible task, but do try and find that one person that is willing to put up with you for 8 hours in the same boat. Third, pay your entry fee early. This takes care of trying to dig up the money at the last minute and can prevent some embarrassing moments at the check-in station. Normally they are very reasonable in price, usually around $20 to $50 per person per day. The reason I say per day is that some Buddy Tournaments are two-day affairs. These are few and far between but are really great fun to fish. Before you get on the water there is a few hints and suggestions I would like to pass on. First, get your equipment together beforehand and insure that everything is in the best shape possible: rods, reels, line, lures, etc. If you are taking your boat, make sure everything is in working order from main motor, trolling motor, and livewell. Check your kill switch to make sure it is working, charge your batteries and don't forget your boat plug. Yes, I did say your boat plug. There isn't anything worse than standing in your boat up to your ankles in water trying to figure out where you left that darn plug.
