Hello and welcome to Hook, Line and Sinker! I'm Mike Campbell and will be taking you on a monthly tour of the sport and art of fishing. I've fished in many tournaments over the years, and even won a few. I was Missouri State BASS Champion in 1984, and I'll tell you how that came about in a later article.

I'll begin with the basics, such as what equipment to use for different types of fishing, how to take care of and make your equipment ready for the fishing season or for a tournament. Yes, there is routine maintenance on fishing equipment! Many people just put their fishing poles away for the winter and when spring comes they take them out, blow the dust off, go fishing, and wonder why the line keeps hanging up and snagging in the reel, or why it breaks the first time they get a fish on the line. You have to take care of your equipment, and it'll take care of you!

We'll also go to the different lakes that I've personally fished, both recreationally and in tournaments. I'll tell you some fish stories and some FISH tales! I'll hook you up with the links for information to all the tournaments and show you where to find everything you ever wanted to know about fish, supplies, lakes, and weather conditions.

Yes, tournaments are fun, but --

Some of the most fun I have had this year came when my 18 year old nephew, Tim, called me up one Friday morning, wanting to know if I'd like to join him to check out a pond he'd gotten permission to fish from a local farmer. Needless to say I jumped at this chance. I have learned over the years not to turn down a free fishing trip, but I also found out that sometimes the smaller bodies waters could produce some really big fish. I readily agreed to join him, and made arrangements to pick him up at his house. When I got there it was like watching a teenager getting ready for his first prom. He was all aglow with the excitement of taking his favorite uncle fishing and to a place I have never been before.

You have to understand that Tim has just started bass fishing this year and has been trying to pick my brain about water conditions, weather conditions, lures, lure sizes, colors, and just about every aspect of bass fishing. He is so driven trying to learn more that he has even awakened me on more then one occasion at 5 in the morning to get my advice on what lures he should use for the conditions of the upcoming day. Tim's increasing desire for knowledge and his want to improve his fishing skills has made me a very proud uncle.
