Predictions 2002

Mar 31, 2002 - © Greg Spira

My predictions for the 2002 baseball season.

NL East

1. Braves

2. Mets

3. Phillies

4. Marlins

5. Expos

The Braves aren't a dominant team anymore, but their offense is bound to rebound this season, and the Mets have a lot more question marks.

NL Central

1. Astros

2. Cardinals

3. Cubs

4. Reds

5. Brewers

6. Pirates

The Astros and Cardinals are probably the two best teams in the league and it will be a dogfight for the division title, though both teams will probably make the playoffs.

NL West

1. Rockies

2. Giants

3. Diamondbacks

4. Padres

5. Dodgers

This is an anything can happen division, and all the teams should stay in the pennant race till the very end.

AL East

1. Yankees

2. Red Sox

3. Blue Jays

4. Orioles

5. Devil Rays

The Yankees will dominate, while the Red Sox have to hope for good health and compete with the AL West loser for the wild card.

AL Central

1. White Sox

2. Twins

3. Indians

4. Tigers

5. Royals

The Sox have the most talent so far. The Twins still have a severe power shortage, and it's doubtful their great rotation can win the division without any help.

AL West

1. Mariners

2. Athletics

3. Rangers

4. Angels

This will be the best division in baseball this year. Neither the Mariners or Athletics will win 100 games again, but they both could end up in the playoffs if the intra-division games don't hurt too much, and the Rangers will be the most improved team in the league.

Predicting the playoffs is like random number generation, but the NL Central should produce the NL Champion while the AL Champion will come from either the East or West.
