Hitters of 2001

Aug 31, 2001 - © Greg Spira

Reviewing baseball's best hitters of this season, thru August 30, 2001. Measured by on-base percentage plus slugging percentage

1 - Barry Bonds - 1.317 - With an on-base percentage of almost .500 and 57 homers, Bonds is having on of the top 5 seasons of all time

2. Sammy Sosa - 1.167 - This has clearly been Sosa's best season. It's hard to believe the Cubs almost dumped him last year.

3. Luis Gonzalez - 1.161 - Three springs ago, Gonzalez almost lost his job. Now he's the MVP of a division leader that includes the top two pitchers in the league.

4. Todd Helton - 1.131 - His numbers are somewhat Coorsflated, but he's still been the best first baseman in the NL this year

5. Jason Giambi - 1.114 - Looking to capture MVP honors for the second year in a row

6. Larry Walker - 1.097 - Another great year from Walker with some thanks due to Coors

7. Lance Berkman - 1.065 - Who would've guessed that Berkman would be the Astros MVP? The Astros have the best young major league talent in baseball.

8. Jim Thome - 1.063 - Some feared Thome was losing his abilities earlier in the year, but Thome's torrid second half has made clear he's still at the top of his game.

9. Gary Sheffield - 1.048 - Just think where the Dodgers would be if they had traded Sheffield as rumored in the spring.

10. Manny Ramirez - 1.043 - Has cooled after a monster first half, but has still been a great value for the Red Sox.

Other players with an OPS of over 1.000:

11. Albert Pujols - 1.020 - The NL Rookie of the Year has been solid in the second half after a spectacular first half.

12. Alex Rodriguez - 1.012 - He's earned his $25 million this year, even though his team has stunk.

13. Jan Gonzalez - 1.004 - A great comeback season will help him win a big contract this winter.

The rest of the top 20: 14. Brian Giles at .999, 15. Chipper Jones at .996, 16. Cliff Floyd at .996, 17. Moises Alou at .994, 18 Edgar Martinez at .991, 19. Phil Nevin at .991 and 20. Vlad Guerreo at .981.
