Pay No Attention To These Silly Stats

Apr 11, 2001 - © Greg Spira

The results of the first week or two of baseball tends to create an incredible rush to judgement among fans and the media. What happens early on in the season often creates an indelible impression that will take months to be removed. The reality is that hot and cold starts by both players and teams mean almost nothing in the long run.

But the statistics that come about are so extreme one can't help but be amused and fascinated. So in that spirit I present some of the more interesting starts for 2001 thru Tuesday, April 10th.

Ray Lankford has a 1.826 OPS (OBP +SLG)

Shannon Stewart has "created" 18 runs

Luis Gonzalez has 6 home runs, while Mark Grudzielanek has 5

Sammy Sosa has walked 11 times

Pat Burrell has struck out 17 times

Placido Polanco is batting .524

Curt Schilling has struck out 22 batters

Tom Glavine has walked 8 batters, the most in the majors

Livan Hernandez has given up 5 home runs

Andy Benes has a 12.46 ERA

Darry Kile has been allowing hitters a .491 OBP

Again, these numbers are for amusement value only. Fans are better off sticking with their presesaon predictions than adjusting for what happens in the first week.
