As ranked by on-base percenatge plus slugging percentage, the top 20 bats of 2000 thru May 26, 2000.

1. Mark McGwire - 1.414 - Hitting home runs at a faster pace than ever.

2. Barry Bonds - 1.277 - The best player of the 1990s shows little sign of slowing down.

3. Jim Edmonds - 1.247 - The biggest acquisition of the offseason.

4. Todd Helton - 1.222 - His numbers are Coors-enhanced, of course, but it's still an impressive start.

5. Vlad Guerrero - 1.164 - The best young hitter in the game

6. Mike Piazza - 1.152 - Worth every penny to the Mets.

7. Alex Rodriguez - 1.142 - The best player in baseball... and undoubtedly will sign the biggest free agent contract ever this fall.

8. Ivan Rodriguez - 1.142 - Might actually deserve strong MVP consideration this year, unlike last year, when he won the writers' vote.

9. Edgar Martinez - 1.139 - The energizer DH. The biggest veteran bargain in baseball, year after year.

10. Troy Glaus - 1.123 - Fulfilling his potential and more.

11. Brian Giles - 1.118 - His new long-term contract will probably turn out to be a bargain for the Pirates.

12. Jermaine Dye - 1.109 - A huge surprise. Was late in turning his tools into performance, but he now plays like a star.

13. Carl Everett - 1.087 - Doing exactly what the Red Sox acquired him for. Everett now deserves mention alongside Pedro and Nomar.

14. Steve Finley - 1.081 - He's been great ever since he got away from Qualcomm, which killed his stats.

15. Shawn Green - 1.073 - Fulfilling all realistic expectations and more, though he's still not worth the money the Dodger signed him for.

16. Mo Vaughn - 1.067 - A healthy Mo has helped revive the Angels.

17. Carlos Delgado - 1.067 - Helping to lead the Blue Jays' charge in the AL.

18. Jason Giambi - 1.066 - Is enjoying having his brother around.

19. Ken Caminiti - 1.065 - He's healthy for now ... and surprisingly, doing better away than at run-friendly Enron.

20. Gary Sheffield - 1.063 - Will be a key to keeping the Dodgers in the race.
