World Series Game 1 Diary

Oct 23, 1999 - © Greg Spira

Top of the 5th inning: Andruw Jones hits a ball really hard but right at Scott Brosius. Hernandez is still getting hitters out, but the Braves' hitters don't look quite so foolish anymore.

Bottom of the 5th Inning: The wind is really blowing balls that get high into the air around. Walt Weiss thought that a pop up by Ricky Ledee would land near his shortstop position, but instead he had to run towards the mound to barely make a one-handed catch of Ledee's pop out.

Top of the 6th Inning: Bob Costas, broadcasting the game on NBC with Joe Morgan, sounds desperate for something to happen. He just informed viewers that El Duque translates into English as "The Duke." And now he's promoting tomorrow's All-Century ceremonies.

Commercial Break: Evidently, advertisers think that everybody watching this game is dreaming about on-line stock trading, because almost half the commercials I've seen in-between innings have to do with just that.

Bottom of the 6th Inning: Gerald Williams hits a slight ground ball towards first base that looks like it's going foul, but Orlando Hernandez aggressively goes after it, picks it up, and tags Williams out. Most pitchers wouldn't even think of trying to make a play on the ball.

Top of the 7th Inning: Maddux walks Bernie Williams to lead off the inning after the home plate umpire calls a very close 2-1 pitch a ball. Williams is fast, but never really learned how to steal bases, so Maddux isn't paying much attention to him just yet. Now Maddux throws over there weakly a few times, just to keep Williams aware that Maddux is aware. Surprisingly, Williams does attempt to steal 2nd base, and Eddie Perez doesn't even attempt a throw on a pitch close to the dirt.

Tino Martinez then strikes out swinging at a pitch in the dirt. Perez has to throw to first to complete the out, but first he runs out towards second base to make sure Williams stays put.

Posada pops up on a high fastball that he shouldn't have swung at.

Maddux easily strikes out Ricky Ledee, making him look foolish at the plate.

Bottom of the 7th Inning: Hernandez has just walked Chipper Jones on 4 straight pitches. After Hernandez fell behind on Chipper 2-0, he seemed ready to concede a walk, not throwing Chipper anything particularly inviting.

Jones runs on the first pitch to Jordan, who fouls the pitch back.

Jordan pops out. Klesko pops out. Jones
