1999 Hall of Fame Voting

Feb 8, 1999 - © Greg Spira

Soon the Veterans committee will speak up with their selections. The Veterans Committee has, for the most part, done an awful job over the years, electing many players who are clearly not Hall of Fame caliber. The committee has a habit of electing its friends, such as Phil Rizzuto several years ago. This year's rumored electee is Dom Dimaggio, a fine player but not a Hall of Famer by any reasonable standard. The Veterans committee has done a reasonable job electing 19th Century players and Negro Leaguers, but its record is atrocious as far as evaluating the peers of the players on the committee. Unfortunately, recent changes in the eligibility rules making things tougher for post 1960 players to get in through the Veterans Committee has almost forced the committee to elect more of their undeserving peers - cause there's no one else they can elect.
