Coming to a Ballpark Near You


Peter was devastated. Not only wouldn't he be able to see the game in person---he wouldn't be able to see the first part of the game unless he went into a bar near the Stadium instead of going home, and since his chip didn't contain current drug test data, no bar would allow him in.

He hated Bud Selig on one level, but loved him on another. Sure, he was going to miss the first part of the game, but it was HIS own fault that he forgot to the get his drug test last week. He was so caught up in the excitement of the Yankees just edging out the Blue Jays in the first playoff round that he it completely slipped his mind. If he had been working it wouldn't have happened but he deliberately planned his vacation for these two weeks, especially since this was the last year that any company would be giving employees two full weeks of vacation a year.

So Peter hated Bud Selig for what was happening, but Peter knew drug testing was necessary. Americans had to be protected from themselves and this was one way to do it. Why, once Jason Giambi admitted that he has used steroids, almost all the players joined with the owners in creating and implementing a rigid drug testing program. It was at about that time that a senator from Arizona joined forces with a senator from Massachusetts to extend the drug testing program to all fans who wanted to attend a sporting event. It was a stroke of genius since it made universal drug testing of workers the next logical step. Now individuals were tested for drugs from the moment of birth until they died.

The Yankee Stadium security guard scanned Peter's wrist to confirm the results of the first scan, set up an appointment for him to be tested at work the next day, and withdrew $500 from his bank account, which was the fine for missing a drug test. His vacation was over.

Peter wanted to protest but he knew that the days of protesting were long since gone. He asked if he could leave and the security guard told him that she understood that he was anxious to get home to watch the remainder of the game but that he couldn't drive since he had not had a drug test. The city would provide transportation for him, but
