Amish Friendship Bread is a true starter bread. It is a good dessert for the holidays. The starter for the bread takes ten days to prepare, which may seem extraordinary.

Note: Do Not Use Metal Containers or Utensils

Ingredients:
  • 1 package (0.25 ounces) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup warm milk

Directions:
  1. Dissolve the yeast in the water in a small bowl. Let stand for 10 minutes.
  2. In at least a 2 -quart container (plastic, glass or ceramic), combine flour and sugar. Mix the flour and sugar well so the flour will not clump when the milk is added.
  3. Slowly stir the milk in. Cover loosely and let it stand at room temperature until bubbly. This is day 1 of the 10-day cycle.
  4. On days 2-4 you will do nothing but stir the starter with a spoon (wooden or plastic).
  5. On the 5th day combine 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar and add to the starter. Add 1 cup milk and stir well.
  6. On the 6th -9th day, stir the starter.
  7. On the 10th day combine 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar and stir into the starter with 1 cup milk. Your starter is now complete.
Making the Bread

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup starter
  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Mix the starter, oil, eggs, and vanilla together in one bowl.
  2. In another bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and salt together.
  3. Add the flour mixture to the starter mixture and mix well.
  4. Pour into loaf pan(s) and bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour.
Mixture will yield one to two loaves of bread depending on the size of your loaf pan. Take a cup (or more) of the starter and pass it on to a friend with the recipe for the bread.

There are many variations you can make with this recipe, some of which include omitting the cinamon and adding a couple of mashed bananas or adding chocolate chips or nuts to the basic recipe.
