Breakfast With the Dees

Jun 12, 2002 - © Terrie Murray

According to Kenn Kaufman's "Lives of North American Birds," black-capped chickadees pair up in the fall and remain together as part of a winter flock. In early spring they'll nest in tree cavities (or nest boxes). They lay 6-8 eggs. Incubation is by the female only, for 12-13 days. The young leave the nest at about 16 days, and both parents feed them. I'd guess the youngsters in my yard have been out of the nest for only a day or two, given their unsteady flight patterns.

Some mornings, chores just have to wait. This morning was one of those mornings, as I had breakfast with the Dee family.
