Well, the Great Backyard Bird Count is finished for another year. I counted all four days, in four different locations: home, the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Gardens, Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge, and Oak's Bottom Wildlife Refuge. My favorite bird: dunlin, in a flock of more than 5000 at Ankeny (see photo, above). But that is closely followed by the 27 great blue herons I saw on nests at a rookery on Ross Island, right here in Portland. I find it magical and inspirational that there can be such a display of wildness in the midst of urban Portland. I also got a life bird: common redpoll, four of them, seen at Oak's Bottom on Monday morning.
The following are my cummulative totals. I entered my counts for each area separately onto the GBBC web page, noting the highest number seen at any one time. These are the CUMMULATIVE totals, all birds seen over the course of the weekend.
How did everyone else do?
