January, 2002: Resolutions for Nature

I resolve to explore my community, beginning with my own Johnson Creek watershed area and expanding outward from there. I want to find the places where the herons nest and the peregrines hunt and the beavers work and the otters play. I want to celebrate the arrival of the first warblers returning to Mt. Tabor in the spring, and the salmon returning to spawn in the fall.

Most importantly, I resolve to teach and to write and to speak out and share the natural world whenever I can. In the words of local nature writer Robert Michael Pyle, "what is the extinction of a condor to a child who has never known a wren?"

These are my resolutions for nature for 2002 and beyond. I encourage you to think about the natural world which surrounds you, beginning in your own back yard, and how you can nurture it and increase your enjoyment of the birds, bugs, animals and plants which bring us so much joy.

Happy New Year from the Backyard Birdwatching Almanac!
