And the Winner Is ----

Apr 6, 2001 - © Terrie Murray

Alice's Goldfinch
Today we announce the winner of the photo contest, along with the four runners-up. This was HARD! We had lots of good entries. There are a lot of you backyard birdwatchers who are also good photographers!

The winning photographs are the ones which we felt best fit the criteria, which was to depict backyard birds or backyard birdwatching. Many thanks to my two preliminary judges, Katherine Wolfthal of Massachusettes and Shelly Ducharme of Alabama, and my finalists judge, Don Baccus, a professional guide and nature photographer in Portland, Oregon. You can see samples of Don's work at http://donb.photo.net

And now -- the winners! first, the four runner-ups, in no particular order:

ALICE TOPPING, from Illinois, for her photo of a goldfinch:

RICK DICKSON, from Pennsylvania, for his photo of a cardinal:

and Rick Dickson again, for his photo of purple martins:

and SHERRY HUNTER, from Michigan, for her photo of a hummingbird:

And the winning photographer is BRENDA MUNCRIEF, from Huntsville, Texas, for her stunning series of photos of pine warblers.

Congratulations, Brenda! Your prize, a copy of David Allen Sibley's Guide to Birds, will be in the mail to you very soon.

The response to this contest was so good that I'll definitely be doing it again, so keep checking back. Thanks to all those who participated!
